moving along

This past weekend I went up to Lansing to visit my sister, she had a fairly intensive surgery last week. She was doing well and in good spirits. A couple of months ago I guess she decided that she really wanted to go (back) to college, and in particular, overseas. She heard last week that she got into the University of York in England. She was pretty excited, although I think she is still unsure if she will go or not – has to work some of the financial aspects out. Anyway, its been good to see exciting things happen for her after having some difficult times this past couple years or so.

Other than that, I also finished a couple Michael Crichton books this weekend, Next and Prey. Both were okay, I enjoyed Prey much more than Next, simply because the ending of Next really seemed in a rush to tie up loose ends and I didn’t think it did very well. But more than the stories, the bibliography Crichton provides is great. Next deals with genetic engineering and gene patents, while Prey deals with the convergence of computer programming and bio-genetics, and the bibliography for both books provide a lot of really good reads for one interested on those topics.

The usual work schedule this week is cut short by my firm’s annual retreat. Around this time each year the attorneys in the firm and any available spouses go to some Bed and Breakfast in northwest Indiana for a couple days. The spouse usually go shopping or go see movies and what not while I will meet with the partners and discuss business stuff – budget planning, staff concerns, and other issues that surround a small business enterprise. I am looking forward to it, it will be nice to get away for a couple days as well as continue to learn the ins and outs of the business of being a lawyer…more tidbits you never really learn while in school. Also, the restaurants we go to for dinner are supposed to be excellent, so it will be fun, I think, for Jackie and I to eat at places that we would never usually go to because of the prices.
